Plus-sized travellers are voicing their frustration over what they deem to be discriminatory airline policies, claiming they are being forced to pay twice for the same experience, reports CNN Travel.
The average width of airplane seats has been shrinking, while the global population is becoming larger. Policies regarding plus-size passengers vary among airlines, with some requiring the purchase of an additional seat in advance, while others have no guidelines at all. Plus-sized travel influencer Jae'lynn Chaney launched a petition urging the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to mandate a standard policy that prioritizes the comfort, safety and well-being of all passengers. As of 12JUN, the petition had over 17,000 signatures.
In Canada, it points out that obesity is recognized as a disability, and functionally disabled passengers are entitled to an extra seat on domestic flights at no charge. However, these rules do not apply to international flights.
