The rate at which wheelchairs are being lost, damaged, or not returned on time has not improved in four years, according to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Travel Weekly is reporting.
The department has tracked statistics of mishandled wheelchairs since 2018; statistics for 2022 were the same as in the first year of full reporting.
In 2022, the 10 largest carriers in the U.S. mishandled 11,389 wheelchairs, or 1.54 per cent of the total chairs they transported. That’s over twice as bad as their performance with regular baggage; by comparison, 0.64 per cent of bags were mishandled last year. Spirit Airlines and JetBlue fared especially poorly, with both mishandling over 5 per cent of wheelchairs.
