Port of Seattle Bans Facial Recognition Technology for Certain Uses

The Port of Seattle Commission voted to permanently ban the use of biometric technology for law enforcement, security and mass surveillance purposes by the port, which includes facial recognition. Private-sector entities operating at the port will also be subject to the ban. Members of the public and various advocacy organizations have raised their concerns of the expanding use of biometrics, citing privacy, equity and civil liberties conflicts, as well as the potential for unregulated 'mass surveillance.' Mass surveillance is specifically prohibited with the policy, which the Commission defines as any use of biometric technology to identify individuals without both their awareness and active participation. The Port of Seattle is the first port authority in the US to formally limit the use of biometric technology.
