Princess Cruises is supporting penguin conservation efforts in New Zealand through their local partnerships program, reports Seatrade Cruise News.
The program is funding the Dunedin-based organization Natures Wonders, which is focused on protecting New Zealand's wildlife. The partnership will help build habitats for a growing blue penguin colony in Otago and preserve the last major yellow-eyed penguin colony.
Stuart Allison, SVP Asia Pacific, UK and Europe of Princess Cruises, said the partnership will play a crucial role in safeguarding these species for future generations. The funding will be used to build nesting boxes for blue penguins and expand predator-free zones, benefiting both penguin colonies. Princess Cruises' local partnerships program, launched in 2019 and funded by guest donations, also supports Bay Bush Action in the Bay of Islands.
The support from Princess Cruises has been instrumental in increasing kiwi numbers and promoting native plant regeneration in Opua State Forest, according to Craig Salmon, trustee of Bay Bush Action.
