Rail Travel in Europe is More Expensive Than Flying: Greenpeace Wants That to Change

Greenpeace is calling for immediate action to address the significant cost difference between plane and rail tickets on European routes, reports the NZ Herald.

The organization’s analysis highlights that approximately 70 per cent of flights are cheaper than corresponding rail journeys, even on popular short-haul routes with efficient train options. To make eco-friendly rail travel a viable alternative, Greenpeace calls for improved infrastructure, investigation of airline pricing strategies and reduced train ticket prices to incentivize travellers to choose environmentally friendly rail over flying.

Greenpeace proposes introducing affordable long-term passes covering all public transport across the EU, which has been successful in Austria, Spain, and Luxembourg.
