One of Paris’ most iconic department stores, La Samaritaine, reopened following an unexpected closure in 2005 due to fire and safety hazards. Many wondered when it would reopen, or if it was closed for good, as the La Samaritaine signs remained up on its location near the Louvre. Ernest Cognacq and Mary Louise Jay opened the department store in 1870, and its innovative features at the time included price tags attached to every item, and shoppers allowed to browse freely without being followed by salespeople. The new building was designed by Japanese architectural company SANAA and blends modern glass structures with the refurbished 1910s design.
