Rome’s Colosseum will now open its subterranean levels to the public for the first time in its history. When it was still in use, gladiators and animals once waited in the underground levels, or "hypogea," before entering combat. Italy's Ministry of Culture announced the restoration of the hypogea in partnership with Italian fashion brand Tod's and company CEO Diego Della Valle at an unveiling ceremony. The restoration project, which has seen the entire Colosseum restored over the past decade, was started by Tod's CEO Diego Della Valle and Rome's Archaeological Heritage Department in 2011. A small portion was opened to the public in 2016. The major restoration began in 2018, and suffered some setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
