Royal Caribbean has unveiled a plan to convert solid waste into usable energy on two upcoming ships, Icon of the Seas and Silver Nova, reports Cruise Radio.
The waste-to-energy system, known as "Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis (MAP) and Micro Auto Gasification (MAG)," is the first of its kind to be implemented on a cruise ship. The technology will transform the solid waste into synthesis gas or syngas, which can be used to power the vessels.
The move is part of Royal Caribbean’s broader sustainability program called SEA the Future, which aims to reduce food waste by 50 per cent across the fleet by 2025, among other initiatives.
