Should You Cancel Travel Plans? A Medical Expert Weighs In

As COVID-19 cases rise in the U.S., travellers are wondering if they should reconsider travelling for the rest of the summer. CNN Medical Analyst Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and visiting professor of health policy and management at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, asks travellers to consider the current medical risk of their household: if everyone is fully vaccinated, they can consider travelling as they are better protected from COVID-19, but if someone in their home is unvaccinated or immunocompromised, circumstances may differ and the risk to travel may be higher. Another factor to consider is destination - travellers may be going to places deemed as high risk, or they may be going to outdoor destinations and spending time in the open air. Wen also comments on plane travel, saying that it is “relatively safe for vaccinated people,” so long as travellers wear a high quality mask and dine quickly if necessary.
