The U.S. is experiencing a pilot shortage due to pandemic-era retirements and an exit from the industry, followed by a surge in travel demand, resulting in a greater need for pilots, even as their numbers dwindled, reports Skift.
The impact has a snowball effect on air travel. Regional airlines particularly struggle to find enough captains, affecting services to smaller cities. Major carriers have acknowledged a projected shortage of 10,000 pilots until 2027. To counter this, airlines are raising pay and implementing strategies like opening flight schools and offering scholarships. But the solution is not instant and several years of a lag time and stress on aviation will continue until some of the long-term strategies start to pay off.
