Southwest Airlines Pilots Ask U.S. Government For The Right To Strike

Southwest Airlines pilots have asked the U.S. federal government’s National Mediation Board to release them from negotiations, which would initiate the countdown for them to strike, reports View from the Wing.

Last month, 99 per cent of their members voted to authorize a strike. While pilots at other airlines across North America have received significant raises, as Open Jaw reported, Southwest pilots have been unable to finalize their contract negotiations.

Southwest pilots’ salaries do not match those of pilots at United, Delta, and American who operate widebody aircraft on long-haul flights, according to the report.

If the National Mediation Board grants the pilots' request, the pressure on Southwest Airlines to reach an agreement will increase, says the report. However, the board is not obligated to do so.
