Texas Governor Greg Abbott says he signed a new law that bans the ability for any business in Texas from asking for vaccine information, including cruise lines. Abbott specifically addressed the issue of cruise ships, tweeting: "I'm signing a law today that prohibits any business operating in Texas from requiring vaccine passports or any vaccine information,” in response to someone asking about cruise ships sailing to Galveston, TX instead of Florida to get out of the vaccine information ban there. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires in some cases cruise lines to ensure a certain percentage of its guests are fully vaccinated, and this new ruling places the cruise ship industry in a precarious position of wanting to restart operations while also not perpetuating the stigma that cruise ships are “super-spreaders” of COVID-19. This new ruling follows a similar executive order Abbott signed in APR 2021 that prevents agencies or organizations that received public funds from doing the same thing.
