Thai Beach Made Famous by Leonardo DiCaprio's 'The Beach' Reopening After 3 Years

Thailand’s Maya Bay, made famous in the Leonardo DiCaprio movie "The Beach," will reopen after three years after it was closed due to environmental damage. The cove, with white sand and clear waters, became a popular tourist destination after the film’s release in 2000. However, while the 4,000-5,000 daily visitors provided a boost to the local economy, the trash left behind damaged the island’s ecosystem and Thai authorities closed off the destination to tourists in MAY 2018. While the destination is now open, visits are regulated. Between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time, only 300 tourists per hour will be allowed on the island, and must leave once their allotted time is up.
