The Real Reasons Behind Air Travel Baggage Delays

An article in Skift tackles one of the worst problems facing a recovering air travel industry: lost luggage at airports.

Skift blames outdated baggage handling systems that use manual rather than electronic tracking, a lack of available baggage workers, and a lack of data communication between stakeholders, including the airport, airlines and third-party vendors.

Flight disruptions add pressure to the already fragile system and lead to further baggage losses, it adds. While the Swift story predicts that it will take decades to fix the issues, it identifies ways airports can immediately improve operations, such as radio frequency identification (RFID) baggage tags, which are currently used in major warehouses to track inventory.
