The U.S. Airline Industry Has Put a Dent in the Pilot Shortage - But Only a Dent

The airline industry has made progress in addressing the pilot shortage, with consulting firm Oliver Wyman reporting a reduction in the deficit from 17,300 to 13,300 within a year, says a report by Travel Weekly.

Increased pilot certifications and commercial airline recruitments are notable contributors to this improvement.

However, the issue still looms, particularly within regional carriers connecting small and midsize markets. The projection shows a continued shortage, exacerbated by a projected 30% surge in pilot demand over the next decade, impacting regional flights and services to smaller markets, leading to significant flight reductions at approximately 40 U.S. airports since 2019.
