This Popular Italian Region is Imposing Restrictions On Tourists

The autonomous region of northern Italy, Alto Adige, otherwise known as Bolzano-South Tyrol, has announced that it will cap overnight visitors at 2019 levels and is banning new accommodation openings unless there is a cancellation, according to CNN.

The region saw 34 million overnight stays in 2022, and authorities are concerned about the impact of so many visitors on its reputation as an outdoor escape and the ability of locals to find housing. The region has around 230,000 accommodations, and businesses have until 30JUN to report how many people stayed in 2019.

Alto Adige has already been experimenting with restrictions on traveller numbers. In 2021 authorities launched a pilot program restricting car access to Lago di Braies, a glacial lake and major tourist attraction. Restrictions were also placed on access to Alpe di Siusi, an alpine meadow.
