Three Anti-Cruise Ship Initiatives Could be on Ballot for Juneau’s Next Election

Juneau’s next local election, set for 05OCT 2021, could potentially hold three anti-cruise initiative petitions that have been circulating in the local community. The first, titled “Limit Cruise Ship Hours” would prohibit ships with more than 250 passengers from being at the dock between 7pm to 7am local time. The second, titled “Ship Free Saturdays” would prohibit ships with more than 250 passengers from arriving at the town on Saturdays. The final initiative, titled “Cruise Ship Size Limit” would prohibit ships larger than 100k gross tonnage from being at the dock or anchoring at the town after 01JAN 2026. The petitions’ organizer, Karla Hart, a critic of the cruise economy who leads a group called Cruise Control, has until 03JUN to collect about 3,000 signatures on each of the petitions in order for them to appear on the 05OCT ballot.
