Tony Blair, former British Prime Minister, as well as immunologist John Bell, and oncologist David Agus discuss the future of travel and why the world needs a vaccine certification system as the three co-chairs of the Global Health Security Consortium. They say that while there have been some admirable attempts from countries to reopen their borders, the only way to “stem the damage and open up the world safely” is through a global vaccine certification system. They note that scientific evidence shows that vaccines “significantly reduce the likelihood of infection and transmission,” but this progress cannot result in easier travel unless there is a method of recognizing vaccines across borders and the ability for people to prove their vaccinated status. The three say that in order to accomplish this, a cross-border data system to exchange information as well as a coordinated program to recognize vaccines is needed.
