Too Expensive, Too Scarce: Doubt Sets in on Green Aviation Fuel

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), once heralded as the key to a carbon-neutral aviation industry by 2050, is facing challenges due to its scarcity and high costs.

The Financial Post reported that meeting the demand for SAF will necessitate vast amounts of land, water, and natural resources. Airline executives who convened at the World Aviation Festival in Lisbon expressed doubts about meeting the 2050 targets.
While eSAF, a synthetic fuel from renewable sources, offers potential, its production is energy-intensive. IATA underscored the sector's struggles, as alternative fuels represent just 0.15% of global jet fuel supply.
