The Canadian Travel and Tourism Roundtable, as well as leaders representing the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, the British Columbia Hotel Association, Vancouver based travel agencies and Destination Vancouver, have released a statement to call on the Canadian federal government to remove “non-science-based” obstacles for travel, such as PCR tests, as these barriers threaten the survival of Vancouver businesses and free the region’s business travel. In 2019, Vancouver welcomed over 11 million overnight visitors, contributing $14 billion in total revenues to the Metro Vancouver economy, said the groups in the statement. In 2020, revenues fell by 70 per cent compared to the previous year. The groups note that business operators in Vancouver, who rely on international visitors, face another winter season in economic decline as the federal government’s travel regulations lead international travellers to do business elsewhere.
