Trudeau Government Sides with Big Airlines on Unpaid Work Time: CUPE

The Trudeau government has come under fire for ignoring the issue of unpaid work in the airline sector. A petition submitted by CUPE Airline Division President Wesley Lesosky and signed by over 17,000 Canadians called on the federal government to close loopholes allowing airlines to force flight attendants to perform unpaid work daily.

However, Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan’s office issued a response on 03NOV stating that the government would not be closing those loopholes. CUPE’s Airline Division launched the Unpaid Work Won’t Fly campaign to draw attention to mandatory unpaid work within the airline industry and is now filing complaints with the Canada Industrial Relations Board.
