After some deliberation, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has voted to add 33 new spots to its list of World Heritage Sites so far, with possibly more to come. Due to the pandemic, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee did not meet in 2020, and held a virtual session in 2021 to discuss nominations from both years. Destinations have to meet one of several criteria to make the list, and those that do can get financial assistance and expert advice from UNESCO to help preserve the site as well as a boost in tourist numbers. Some sites confirmed for the list include the limestone city of As-Salt in Jordan, Peru's Chankillo Archaeoastronomical Complex, the Trans-Iranian Railway, Saudi Arabia's Ḥimā Cultural Area rock art, and more.
