UNIFOR Denounces VIA Rail Seat Selection and Baggage Fees

VIA Rail Canada's recently implemented baggage policy and reservation system, launched on 18NOV 2023, is causing widespread discontent among passengers and rail workers, just as holiday travel picks up.

Unifor National President Lana Payne criticizes the changes, asserting that rather than enhancing accessibility, they complicate train travel. The policy introduces seat selection and baggage fees akin to budget airlines, disproportionately affecting students and economy-class passengers.

Sleeper and Prestige class travellers also face revised baggage allowances. Unifor's Get Canada Back on Track campaign advocates for a publicly-owned, environmentally sustainable, and worker-friendly passenger rail system, highlighting the departure from VIA Rail's original mandate of providing affordable services.
