US Forest Service is Closing California's National Forests as Wildfires Spread

All of the U.S. national forests in California’s Pacific Southwest Region are now closed as of 31AUG through 17SEP 2021 due to the wildfires currently raging across the state. The closure applies to all national forests in California except the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which isn’t in the Pacific Southwest Region. Closing recreation areas "is especially hard with the approaching Labor Day weekend, when so many people enjoy our national forests,” said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Jennifer Eberlien. Officials say the decision to shut down entry is meant to keep the public and the firefighters safe from the current fires, and to reduce the likelihood that new ones could start. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also cited hot, dry, and windy weather conditions as part of the shutdown, as they would increase the spread of the wildfires.
