Venice Keeps Off List of Endangered World Sites - For Now

Venice will not be listed as an endangered World Heritage site, as UNESCO's panel voted against the recommendation, reports the New York Times.

Despite concerns over climate change, excessive tourism, and development that had incited debate about whether the seaside city would be listed as ‘endangered,’, the experts deemed that Italy had taken adequate steps to protect the fragile city. However, representatives of the World Heritage Convention have stated that more progress is needed for proper conservation.

Italy's efforts to ban large cruise ships, install barriers to prevent flooding, and track tourist movements have been commended. Venice will undergo further monitoring, and suggestions may be made through a new advisory mission.
