Via Rail CEO Calls for Rail Passenger Bill of Rights, Taking Aim at Freight Trains

Via Rail's CEO, Mario Peloquin, has urged the federal government to introduce a rail passenger bill of rights similar to the existing one for air travellers, reports CTV News.

Peloquin proposes that the charter ensures compensation for passengers facing extended train delays. If disruptions arise due to Canada's primary freight railways, on which Via operates, the freight companies should compensate. He further recommends granting Via trains priority over freight trains, echoing Amtrak's privileges in the U.S.

This call follows former transport minister Omar Alghabra's intent to enhance the Via travel experience and the company's recent punctuality improvements.
