Since the pandemic began, Via Rail has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in bar sales, where the company typically brings in millions, the Calgary Sun is reporting. The rail company averaged $2.86-million in annual sales before the pandemic, and those fell to around $381-thousand in 2020.
While train trips and bar sales are up since then, they have not returned to 2019 levels. In 2021 Via only saw 1.5-million trips sold, while before the pandemic it averaged 5-million trips sold per year. In its corporate report, VIA says it does not expect travel - and presumably bar sales - to return to 2019 levels until at least mid-2024.
