WestJet Says Third Parties Should Share Compensation Costs For Flight Delays

WestJet says airlines shouldn’t be the only aviation stakeholders on the hook for compensation costs for passenger delays. Instead, they should be shared with other aviation stakeholders, according to Global News.

While airline delays can be caused by a variety of issues, such as border issues, airport delays, or security, under Canada’s updated the air passenger bill of rights, airlines are solely responsible for compensating passengers, CEO Alex von Hoensbroech pointed out during a Calgary Chamber of Commerce meeting. He concluded that means airlines effectively act as insurance for the entire industry as they have to cover the full cost of delays.

WestJet had to pay out tens of millions of dollars to passengers in 2022, von Hoensbroech said, and those costs can lead to higher fares.
