Wheelchair users on flights should be treated as passengers, not problems, asserts Canada's chief accessibility officer, Stephanie Cadieux. During a CBC Radio interview, she highlights the vulnerability of individuals when their wheelchairs are lost or damaged during air travel.
Such incidents have been ongoing for decades and many wheelchair users report similar issues, such as injuries and reliance on inadequate equipment. The federal auditor general's report revealed that 63% of Canadians with disabilities faced travel barriers in 2019-2020.
Cadieux emphasizes the need for a fundamental shift in the industry's mindset to recognize people with disabilities as paying customers. She also calls for greater accountability, data-driven decisions, and international coordination to improve accessibility standards for air travel and other sectors.
