Windstar’s Caribbean Restart in Question: Unvaccinated Crew Means Ship May Have Nowhere to Go

Windstar Cruises had plans to sail from St. Maarten on 19JUN 2021 for its inaugural sailing with fully-vaccinated passengers, but since only 20 per cent of its 178 crew members are vaccinated, some Caribbean islands are turning the ship away. According to Windstar President Christopher Prelog, the cruise line had been facing challenges getting vaccines in the Caribbean, but the crew had been isolating together for a month and undergoing weekly COVID-19 testing. Windstar is searching for vaccines for the St. Maarten crew. "We are working with the local authorities and the islands in procuring vaccine, and have been for the last few weeks, diligently involved on how to get it to the ship and so on," Prelog said. The line had no problem getting 100 percent of crew vaccinated for its Greece restart, also on Saturday, and its Tahiti restart next month, Prelog noted. To cruise, St. Maarten requires all passengers be fully vaccinated as well as proof of a negative PCR test.
