As of 22JAN, Peru’s Culture Ministry has closed Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail which leads to the site until further notice “to protect the safety of tourists and the population in general,” reports KARRYON. As previously reported by Open Jaw, the country had just recently opened the site on 15JAN after a state of emergency.
The closure comes as protestors gathered in the capital city of Lima calling for the resignation of President Dina Boluarte. Protests and demonstrations have been taking place across the country, including the tourist hubs of Cusco, Puno and Arequipa. In DEC 2022, Peru declared a 30-day state of emergency due to the protests, which has since been extended.
