ACV: “Pressure Is Being Put On Mexican Authorities”

Tourism represents 8.5 per cent of Mexico's gross domestic product and is the main economic driver in the southeast region, which includes the Riviera Maya. Recent gang related violence in Tulum and Cancún is putting that much needed revenue in jeopardy.

An armed clash, which took place Thursday, was the second to shake Mexico's Riviera Maya in recent weeks.
The incidents have led European countries and the United States to warn their citizens about the risks of visiting the Mexican Caribbean.

They also threaten to derail approved plans for an airport in Tulum and the Mayan Train which would greatly facilitate access throughout the region.

In discussion with Air Canada Vacations President, Nino Montagnese, Open Jaw was told the product teams, management and CATO are urgently engaging at local and federal levels in Mexico. “Pressure is being put on Mexican authorities to increase security and ensure the safety of our customers,” said Montagnese.

“Just as the industry begins to recover from COVID, pictures of armed gunmen plastered across the media will destroy faith in a beautiful destination. This has to stop.”

CATO Chair, Brett Walker, says the association is enlisting the collaboration of other entities, “from a CATO perspective, the issue has been raised by members and we are reaching out to other natural alliances like USTOA, ETOA and others to increase our leverage.”

A statement was also issued by Playa Hotels & Resorts regarding last Thursday’s incident:

“The safety and wellbeing of guests and colleagues is always a top priority at all properties managed by Playa Hotels & Resorts, including Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun. As soon as the situation occurred Thursday afternoon, November 4, the hotel team immediately implemented guest safety protocols and engaged local authorities, in an effort to ensure the safety of guests and colleagues.

Later that day, local authorities confirmed Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun may resume normal operations after they conducted a thorough investigation of the hotel. The hotel elevated security measures on property and local areas have increased presence of local authorities, as well.”
