Los Angeles Tourism Celebrates a Century of the Hollywood Sign

2023 marks the 100th anniversary of The Hollywood Sign, which was first lit up on 08DEC in 1923 as an advertisement for an upscale real estate subdivision. Through the years, the sign has remained a prominent California and even American landmark and symbol of the global capital of film.

In late 2022, the Hollywood Sign Trust, the nonprofit trust formed to protect and preserve the cultural and historic landmark, partnered with Sherwin-Williams on an extensive refurbishment of the monument in preparation for the centennial celebrations.

Several other Hollywood institutions are also celebrating their centennials, including Warner Bros. and The Walt Disney Company. As a result, Las Angeles Tourism is is promoting several special events and tours related to Hollywood's history, including behind-the-scenes with iconic studio tours or the chance to be on set for a live TV taping.
